The Federal Revenue Service is implementing a significant update to the format of the National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ), which will now include combinations of letters and numbers.
See below for more information on this novelty.
The Federal Revenue Service published Normative Instruction RFB No. 2,229, dated October 15, 2024, announcing changes to the format of the National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ). Due to the growing demand for new numbers, the format will be updated to include combinations of letters and numbers.
The transition to the alphanumeric format will be gradual and is scheduled to begin in July 2026. The new identification pattern will have 14 characters, distributed as follows:
- The first eight positions will form the root of the number, composed of letters and numbers.
- The following four positions will indicate the order of the establishment, also in alphanumeric format.
- The last two positions will continue to be the check digits, exclusively numeric.
Existing CNPJs will not be affected by the change and will remain valid. In addition, the routine for calculating the check digits will be adjusted, but the method will continue to be based on module 11. The difference lies in the use of the decimal values corresponding to the ASCII codes of the letters and numbers, subtracting 48. For example, "A" will be equivalent to 17, "B" to 18, "C" to 19, and so on.
This update seeks to ensure the continuity of public policies and guarantee the availability of identification numbers, without generating major technical impacts on Brazilian society.
